Day Two: Does Tomato Soup Count as a Vegetable?

I'm pretty sure it does. I mean, I know it's probably not a "whole food", but this is week one of fourteen weeks. By week fourteen I will do better than that. Maybe. :) But I certainly think that my half bowl of tomato soup counts for a serving of veggies at lunch. Or is it a fruit. . . hmmm. . . either way I had a banana with it. The week one challenge is "two fruits AND/OR two vegetables at every meal". Whew. That OR really saves me. :)

For breakfast I juiced apples again, which the children LOVED. Since we are learning the letter "A" I made Apple Cinnamon Muffins, which we enjoyed with apple juice, cut up apples, and applesauce. On the front porch. In our PJs.

Before it got too hot, we also did a Salt Dough Pottery Project on the front porch. Pretty much it was like playing with Play Doh but they were cool with that. Maggie actually made a bowl. It's drying on the front porch as we speak.

Next we did a little seat work. I'm generally using My Father's World kindergarten and first grade for Maggie and Penelope, but going at our own pace and making changes where necessary. To go along with each letter of the alphabet, I'm using catchy little lines from The New England Primer, a Bible reader that was used in the one room schoolhouses circa Little House on the Prairie. :) Check out the little ditty for "A":

We did the "all" word family just because we wanted to. On Day 34's page but that's how we do it at the Rodgers house. I love how flexible homeschooling is! :)

After that we went to our Favorite Place in Town, the Library. Oh how we love the library. Sometimes we go to the Bailey Cove branch and do puppet shows; sometimes we go to the main library and work puzzles and play in the dollhouse. But we never have a dull time at the library. Today we got some really cool finds:

This just looked cute and will complement our study of Peter and the Wolf, an introduction to the orchestra.

This is really sweet, about the different types of homes children live in around the world.

Another sweet one that lists all kinds of cozy places, cozy feelings, cozy smells, and cozy people.

This one totally thrilled my soul. I LOVE John Denver, LOVE that song, LOVE the dude's hair on the front cover. :) I can't wait to read this one over and over in the next week. And teach the song to my littles. :)

We also got a few books on CD that Maggie especially enjoys during quiet time. Sometimes she doesn't take a nap per se, but I still need for everyone to have a "quiet time" at some point. :) Last week she listened to Pippi Longstocking and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland during quiet time. This week we have Mary Poppins, Green Eggs and Ham and Other Servings of Dr. Seuss, and Sarah Plain and Tall. We were listening to Dr. Seuss on the way home and I thought, he had it figured out! He's so true. "From there to here, from here to there, funny things are everywhere." True that, Dr. Seuss. And "Oh, the thoughts you can think!"Seriously.

  1. Well, tomorrow you can order a Geezburger with lettuce, tomatoes and onions and that will count as 3 veggies. :)
Also, tomorrow we'll have PE at Grandmomma's pool, and I have some bananas I'll be happy to share.

  2. I love the idea of books on tape/CD during nap/quiet time! Our Maggie still has an enforced quiet time that she hardly ever naps during, and sometimes that quiet time consists of her yelling to ask if she can come out of her room yet, haha. She would love books on CD.

And we were at the library today too! for 1/2 an hour around 2.
