Coffee Coffee

My relationship with coffee began when I was a child. My dad, a veterinarian, drank coffee each morning. I loved the way it smelled, but imagined it didn't taste very good. His assistant Vicky also drank coffee, but she was the only woman I knew who drank it. Since Vicky had "boy hair" and wore jeans every day and smoked, I subconsciously categorized coffee drinking as a habit belonging only to men and "manly" women. (No offense to Vicky; I absolutely adored her and will always love her. That was just my picture of her at that time. :)) The first time I actually drank coffee was in college at Auburn. My older brother Matt drank it so I thought it was cool. :) Plus it helped me get through finals. :) I only drank it occasionally, riding to and from Auburn with him or when I was trying to pull an all-nighter studying for a test. Then I loaded it up with enough sugar and creamer that it was more of a dessert than a coffee.

In the last ten years, however, I have developed quite a love for coffee. I really do love the way it smells, the way it tastes, the way it makes me feel. Things can be crazy and then I fix a pot of coffee and. . . ahhhh. . . all is well. The smell of coffee brewing stirs creativity and ingenuity in me. It awakens my senses. My absolute favorite thing is when I wake up early enough in the morning to have my coffee during my quiet time. My dad used to do that. Every morning, rain or shine, weekday or weekend, no matter what was happening, I could catch him sitting on the couch with his Bible in his lap and coffee in his hands. I like to imagine myself being like him. It makes me feel close to him.

I've become quite the coffee connoisseur (sp?). In my opinion, Starbucks is no good. It's overpriced and undervalue. The best cup of coffee in town is a toss-up between Angel's Island Coffee on South Parkway and Old Towne Coffee Shop in Five Points. The best coffee available in stores is Higher Ground Fair Trade Coffee. You can get it at the Trade Fair Marketplace over by Parkway Place mall. I think it's also at Earth Fare.

In my opinion, everyone should be a coffee drinker. Someone who doesn't like coffee is as foreign and strange to me as someone who doesn't like finding $10 in their coat pocket or being paid a compliment. It just doesn't make sense. I think Vicky must have known what was up. :)
