63 Days: A Walk in the Woods with My Favorite Naturalist

To celebrate finishing Apologia Science's Botany curriculum, and because well, we both love nature, Allie and I took a hike on a beautiful trail today. The Huntsville Land Trust has a trail called The Wildflower Trail that runs beside a stream and has some brilliant wildflowers this time of year.

I am constantly amazed at how much knowledge she has about wild plants and creatures. And how much she remembered from Botany this year! She was pointing out the fiddleheads, or beginnings of wild ferns, growing on moss; the poison ivy we needed to avoid; the different types of lichen on trees; even finding tracks and telling me whether they were deer, fox, or dogs. :) Only she can find tiny little creatures and be amazed at the many different kinds of life living in a single square inch of the forest. . .

I'm so proud of my little naturalist. She has recently started a club called Naturehood (neighborhood nature club). She's developing a website for it and brainstorming ideas for how the club can educate our neighborhood about local flora and fauna. The website is still under construction but look for a premiere coming soon. :)

  1. I'm so glad the two of you got to do that together today. Ahhhhhhh, for one-on-one time. You're absolutely right. Allie has a great knowledge of and a beautiful appreciation of creation.
